Here are my first attempts at matte painting. I was watching Peter Jackson's King Kong the other night and was inspired to create my own clip. Very crude, but alot of fun. The giant rocks in the painting were all from one image. I truly admire and respect all those damn great matte painters who make it look so easy.

Matte painting is still somewhat a mystery to me - does the artist retain parts of reference images in the final or is it merely referenced?
